Emanuel Spence Ltd and it's relationship with the History and People of Middlesbrough
John Spence started re-building the business in 1980 and his first task was to save up to buy the Linthorpe Road premises. By 1984 John had bought 298/300 Linthorpe Road and the premises were altered and turned into a showroom and a bathroom shop.

The 1980's were very busy times the vandalism in Middlesbrough was at it's height and Monday mornings were a glaziers paradise - every Monday up to four or five very large plate glass windows were being renewed.

Several large works were being completed with such prestigious jobs such as the refurbishment of Grinkle Park Hotel and many others.

The Company by this time had bought a fleet of vehicles and even bought one of the new computers which had just come out.

As in all good business plans when everything is going right you wonder why !

Just as the business was growing again the recession of 1990 to 1992 arrived and many businesses were going bust every week. However John Spence decided that this presented an opportunity when a local building company closed down on Letitia Industrial Estate. Just as the Agent's were putting up the sign board John put an offer into the receivers and it was accepted. The business was moved from Linthorpe Road to it's present premises above at Letitia Industrial Estate. The site was large, had first class transport links and was ideal for a modern business. The company also needed new vehicles so John sold his new car and bought new vans.

So when everyone else was cutting back and closing Emanuel Spence moved to new premises and had new vehicles - it certainly gave competitors something to think about !

The Next move to the present

The rebuilding

Emanuel Spence could now offer a full multi trade service. This was invaluable in the future growth of the same and replaced some of the older trades which were in decline such as picture framing and leaded light making.

Another milestone was soon to occur - John Spence married Joanne Bolton on 9th December 2000

One of the significant changes of the 1990's for Emanuel Spence was the addition of Multi Trades.

The professions were changing and Customer expectations too. People were no longer prepared to just employ a Plumber or Glazier, then wait for the Joiner or Bricklayer.

So John Spence decided that to give a complete service to his customers he should employ these trades directly rather than sub contract.

John Spence started by buying a small building Company called Ayresome Properties who had worked for him for many years, their staff were amalgamated into Emanuel Spence.

With the change in regulations and the increase of Electrical work John Spence decided that we needed to be able to offer a better electrical service.

So Emanuel Spence have recruited their own fully qualified Electricians to complete our compliment of trades.

Our Customers now have a full Building Services Company to call on to undertake whatever work they may require.
